Every June, people across the entire world celebrate Pride Month, a time to celebrate the LGBTQI+ community and further campaign for equality. Pride marches take place every year in London, typically on 29th June.

Pride Month

How did Pride Month start?

The gay rights movement has been going since the early 1900s, but the movement received a huge boost when the Stonewall riots happened. In the 1950’s and 60’s, being gay was still illegal in 49 states in America and punishment included fines and imprisonment. Gay clubs were considered a haven for members of the LGBTQI+ community to relax and socialise without fear of discrimination. Police routinely raided these clubs.

On June 28, 1969, the police raided a popular gay club in New York called The Stonewall Inn. When the police began removing people from the bar, people fought back. After the Stonewall uprising, there were 6 days of protests which gained a lot of attention from the media. More people became aware of the gay rights movement in the United States and worldwide.
